Vitamin D3 is also known as cholecalciferol. It is a fat-soluble vitamin and the most important vitamin in a group of D vitamins (D1-D5). Vitamin D3 comes as a tablet. The precursor (7-dehydrocholesterol) is formed in the mitochondria from cholesterol and converted to vitamin D3 in the skin by exposure to sunlight (more than 10,000 IU of vitamin D3 are formed in a single sunbath). Since this form of vitamin D3 is unstable, it is first transported via the blood to the liver where it is converted to the intermediate stage of 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and then to the final biologically active form, vitamin D3, in the mitochondria of the kidney tubules.
